How to Help for the Scouting Community

Building nest boxes for nuthatches is a perfect Eagle Project or Trailblazer Project. For a Boy Scout with the help of his troop, forty nest boxes can be built in an afternoon. Not too long ago, a very common Eagle Project was to build nest boxes for bluebirds, as the bluebird population was in decline. Today, there are many bluebirds again, but nuthatch population is in decline due to urbanization.

It's really easy to make a nest box for a nuthatch. You can create a box just like a any birdhouse, but the opening for the bird needs to be smaller, to keep larger birds out. Plans for the houses can easily be found on the internet. Click  here for a simple, sturdy plan that can be combined with the excluders (see below).

Birdhouse openings with a diameter of one inch are best for nuthatches, because the small hole size keeps larger birds out. Although it's easy, one doesn't have to construct their own nest box. One can turn any birdhouse into one fit for a nuthatch with an excluder, a metal piece that can be attached to any birdhouse. The Audubon Society's North Carolina branch will give free excluders to those who contact them at nuthatch@audubon.org. This allows those who already have birdhouses to easily convert them to nuthatch houses.

In conclusion, if you are searching for an Eagle Project or know that you will be soon, consider nest box construction for brown-headed nuthatches. It's a project that contains the perfect amount of planning and grunt work for an Eagle Project.
